The short answer
Heat pump repair prices depend on whether the fault is in controls (defrost board, sensors, thermostat), moving parts (fan motor, reversing valve), the refrigerant circuit (leaks, recharge), or the compressor. Controls are the least expensive; refrigerant leaks and compressors cost the most.
We don't publish price quotes. Providers in our network set their own prices, and costs vary by region, season and equipment. This guide explains what moves the number, so you can compare quotes with confidence.
Cost factors
| Factor | How it affects the price |
|---|---|
| Controls and sensors | Defrost boards, sensors, capacitors and contactors are common, moderate repairs. |
| Refrigerant leaks | Finding and repairing a leak, then evacuating and recharging, takes time; the refrigerant type also affects price. |
| Reversing valve | A stuck reversing valve requires refrigerant recovery and brazing, a major repair. |
| Compressor | The most expensive single component; warranty status matters a lot. |
| Ductless systems | Inverter boards and proprietary parts can be costly and brand-specific. |
| Backup heat | Heat strips, sequencers and breakers are separate from the heat pump itself. |
Ways to keep the bill down
- Check and clean filters (and mini-split filters) monthly in winter.
- Keep snow, ice and roof drip off the outdoor unit.
- Have the model and serial number ready for warranty lookup.
- Ask whether the repair is covered by the compressor or parts warranty.
- Schedule maintenance before winter to test defrost and backup heat.
Repair or replace?
| What you see | Normal? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Thin white frost on the coil | Yes | Nothing; defrost will clear it |
| Steam rising from the unit | Yes, during defrost | Nothing |
| Thick ice encasing the unit | No | Turn to EM heat and call (guide) |
| Warm, not hot, air from vents | Usually | Heat pumps deliver lower-temperature air than furnaces |
| AUX on constantly above 35°F | No | Call; heat pump may not be running |
Questions to ask before approving work
- What exactly failed, and how did you confirm it?
- Is the part covered by the manufacturer's warranty?
- Is this price for parts and labor, including any trip fee?
- Is the part in stock, or does it need to be ordered?
- What warranty do you provide on the labor?
Cost FAQs
Is it worth fixing a refrigerant leak?
For a newer system, usually yes. For an older system using R-22, refrigerant costs and age often make replacement the better value.
Will running on emergency heat damage anything?
No, but it uses only backup heat, which typically costs much more to run. Use it temporarily until the heat pump is repaired.
Seasonal timing

Demand peaks during the first hard freeze and every arctic front after it. Scheduling maintenance or replacement in early fall usually means more choice, shorter waits and fewer after-hours charges.
Utility and state programs change often. Check your utility's website for current heating equipment rebates.
